If you have a yard that is already terraced or is not level, consider creating your raised garden beds on the higher section, creating the lower section by digging down and holding the side of the higher section in place using either rocks from your own yard or a row of concrete blocks topped with a row of patio blocks.
If you don't already have the slope to do this, you might build only a wood frame the size you want the raised bed and, atop a layer of gravel (for drainage, add a plastic liner with drain holes created in a row in the center of the bottom.
You can use bales of hay, then put dirt on top and plant seeds or plans, as the hay decomposes it gives nitrogen to the plants and the whole thing can be composted at the end of the year, or you could plant inside huge bags of dirt
