Plain or Fancy - One step Plain - next step Fancy - Crazy Pave - Mosaic - Bottle tops - Broken Tiles - etc...............
Whatever style of tile you use, make sure the mastic and grout are meant for outdoor (exterior) use. One harsh winter could destroy all your hard work.
As for style: that's up to your taste and budget. From a practical point of view go for a durable tile on flat surfaces that collect water, support heavy loads or are subject to damage. (Such as mosaic tile on the treads on stairs. Mosaic tiles offer more grip for the foot - which is why they are often used in pools and showers). For the risers and exposed stringers, go for the sculpted, textured or fancier tiles. (Perhaps a colored bas-relief or 3 dimensional, sculpted shape on the risers).
Were you planning on making your own tiles?

As Susan said, be sure you use outdoor products. Some tiles are incredibly slippery, so take your time in the selection process!
