Our home is over 200 years old and it has the old horse hair plaster. It is impossible to remove the wall paper with out removing some of the plaster. My husband and daughter both have asthma and the last time we removed someof the plaster they were sick for weeks.

yes, but use oil based paint--not latex or water based paint. you might have to use a sealer of some sort first. talk to a paint store person for more advice.

i have, you probably shouldnt but then I always do what I think will work for me. No one ever knew I did it. The only thing to consider is how often do you think it will need to be re-done. I would not go over more than a second time.

I am currently working on this myself! Same horsehair plaster. Yuk! After some research, I learned that after removing any loose areas of wallpaper, prime with oil-based primer to seal it. Latex will only soak into the paper and make it bubble. After primer is applied and is dry, you can see any areas that may need some sparkle to even out surfaces. After sparkle is dry, sand lightly and use your favorite latex color. I know, I know, conventional wisdom says you can't use latex over oil. But you can over wallpaper. A certain amount of the oil-based primer will soak into the paper. Don't expect that the primer will cover completely like paint does. It doesn't need to. It only needs to prevent the latex from absorbing the paper. You will probably need 2 coats of good quality latex. Good luck!

Yes you can paint over the wallpaper. You may end up seeing the seam lines. It will also be a flat wall - no texture to it. You can also find a wallpaper that is intended to be painted. There are a few different textures to choose from. You can google paintable wallpaper to find sources. Good luck!
