How can I reinforce a keyboard slideout shelf to hold something heavy?

I am converting my computer armoire into a sewing cabinet and want to be able to set my sewing machine on the keyboard shelf when it's pulled out.

hardware store has stronger slides that will handle the extra weight, take an old one with you to make sure you get the right length

  • Replace the slides with a heavy duty version that will not only hold the weight of the sewing machine, but also be stable while sewing, and not shimmy while running and hold the weight of volumes of fabric. You will need some industrial strength slides.

    Great reuse idea!

Instead of thinking about putting something on the sewing cabinet shelf itself - how about a tall stool like item that you pull out to sit under the shelf when it is in use.

You might be able to replace the slides that are currently on the armoire with beefier ones. Try going to your home center and checking out what's available in the kitchen section.

Perhaps you could make legs that would go under the keyboard shelf when you have the sewing machine on it. You could put hinges on them or you could make a top frame and attach them to the legs to the four corners, make them wide enough to get your legs comfortably under the shelf.
