Bamboo is way worse than ivy. Once planted you will never get rid of it! Removing ivy is dirty, hard work - if possible hire someone to do it. After it's removed you need to be vigilant about removing any new growth that pops up (and it will). With time and patience you can get rid of ivy.

I don't know about bamboo, but I do know that replacing one invasive species with another isn't always the best idea.

Mow the ivy to ground level. This can kill it over time. Pull out any ivy invading your yard and remove the vines. Since ivy can be started from a cutting, it's important to get rid of the stuff. Moistening your soil can help in pulling the stuff out.

Use a straight white vinegar spray to kill off any of the stuff that creeps into your yard. Another solution is water, salt and liquid soap sprayed on the ivy. Either solution might take a while to do their job, so check back in a few days and repeat the application, avoiding the plants you like.

  • What do you want in the space if there was no ivy? There are other great groundcovers that are beautiful, but not so invasive and easy to control. Sedum and thyme are my two favorites. You can easily kill off the ivy you do not want with vinegar. Bamboo while pretty can also make a mess and the downed leaves can be a fire hazard in areas.

Don't plant the bamboo - you will have a much greater problem.

I thought I would never get rid of bamboo. Be careful where you plant it
