Mulch barrier

I've heard that it's not good for mulch to touch the base of plants. What can I put around the trunk of my Weeping Willow tree so the mulch doesn't touch it. My chickens keep getting in it and spread it around, therefore pushing the mulch over the trunk.

Hello! There are any number of products on the market to protect your tree bark from mice, moles and even chickens! They range from tree gyards to tree rings and from weed mats to wire mesh guards. Your local garden center should have them available as well as amazon.com and other online retailets.

Ive never had a problem with mulch around my trees. It actually keeps you from having to water as much. Ive also seen people out here place river rock in a single layer around trees. I dont think the mulch will hurt your tree but if you dont want it to touch the tree try putting a border around the tree. You can get ones that are high enough to keep your chickens from flinging it around the tree.
