if you seal it properly it doesn't scratch easy.
I have never used chalk paint, but if you can use polyurethane as the finish coats, it is extremely durable. My dad restained some antiques and used polyurethane coats as the finish coats and were done in the early seventies and still look brand new.

check out Famowood. It is a two part epoxy. Easy to use. Give a finish like a bar top.
