Chalk paint is a cool idea but depends on your decor style.
You could sand it down all the way and restain it. Or you could sand it, then prime it well and paint it with standard paint. Then seal it with a safe water based sealant. Or you can use chalk paint which requires no sanding or primer, and then seal it. Or you can paint just the legs of the table and the chairs and do a wood stain on top. So many options! If it is in good shape, I would strip it and restain it. That is a fairly old set. My father redid two claw foot tables, one from his mom and one from my moms mom. He did this in the early seventies and put on a couple coats of polyurethane and to this day it looks like he just redid it and shows the beauty of the old pieces. I am glad he didn't paint them and disguise the beautiful wood that I will be happy to pass on to one of the kids that wants it.
