They now have fertilizers that are made to be used in steps from spring to fall. Maybe that is the way you could go. For sure you need to do a weed and feed in the spring to get an early start on stopping some of the weeds.
In the spring and again in fall with a good winterizing fertilizer, like Scott's.

Hello Joann Childress Bresciani :) I used to be confused about the same thing until I learned there are two basic type of grasses: Warm-Season and Cool-Season grasses, and each type needs to be fertilized at a different time of year. I am posting some links below to help you understand about how to take care of each type (as you probably have some of each type in your lawn, as most folks do, unless they've had their lawn professionally landscaped).
