How can I revitilize my faded green market umbrellas?

I have at least a dozen good quality (now) faded green market umbrellas. I bout a bottle of dark green RIT fabric dye, but the hot water, tub, washing machine yada yada directions made me feel like I and everything else I came in contact with would be stained green for a period of time when all is said and done.

I saw a blog where someone used RIT in a spray bottle for an upholstered chair. In truth, the results were not phenomenal--although the chair was quite...not my style so my appreciation level was low.

Is this RIT+Spray Bottle a known practice? Is there a trick to it?

Thanks in advance.

  • I just paint mine with paint from the craft store. I get an extra year or so out of them. Mine are up year round, but the summer sun where I live is intense - even the best rated sunbrella fabric turns into rags pretty quickly.

Do it in the middle of the yard, take large drum of the hot dye mix. Wear long kitchen rubber gloves, you can put vaseline on the poles you don't want dyed. Dip them and let them sit. Rinse with a hose.

Get green die to make tie dyes with by Tulip.Tie Dye dies aremeant to stain and last a long time. RIT dye is not a strong dye to use.Don't choose a tie dye dye that requires another step like soaking the fabrics in chemical first, as some kits do require this.

Place dye in a spray bottle, and follow package directions. Lay umbrellas out on black garbage bags that have been fully cut upon. To protect the umbrella's central "stick", place in plastic garbage bags and run tape around to tighten. This will prevent spray dye from getting into other parts that you don't want to be dyed green.Spray dye on, wait allotted amount of time and then rinse thoroughly with garden hose.

I have heard of using a fabric paint for this available at home stores, but it could be quite expensive for twelve...
