I have an electric can opener with a knife sharpening thingy on the back. My hubby isn't too thrilled with the idea of me using it, fearing it will damage our knives. Does anyone have experience/advice with this? I was hoping to sharpen my knives at home b/c of the cost of a professional, but I am open to any suggestions. Thanks a bunch!icon

fold Reynolds wrap in layers - put it on a cutting board use your knife to cut strips etc. this will sharpen it and is great for scissors to just cut through the folded Reynolds wrap.

My mom had one of them years ago, but my dad always did hers with a wet stone wheel he had for sharpening lawn mower blades and axes and hatchets. My hubby does them with a series of wet stones depending on how dull or nicked they are. I have never had them done by a pro. They are lethal when he gets done. My mom used the one on her can opener a couple of times when dad was off on a business trip without a problem. Have your hubby do one to see what it does, it might be fine with no damage at all.

They work. You can always try one knife and see how that goes. The key is to move the knife through the grindstones as they spin evenly.

My grandfather sharpened his knives on such a device for years without any problems and he was very particular about his knives. For years he'd done it on a sharpening stone then switched to "that new-fangled thingamabob" and never went back.

  • Do you have a knife sharpening stone or rod? Those are much better. If you have them, learn to use them. I do take some of my better quality knives to be sharpened once a year, it isn't that much per knife.

I do have a rod but thought there was a difference between "honing" the blade and sharpening it. The rod is only for honing the edges, but my knives need to be sharpened. The feedback is awesome and so appreciated ... keep it coming if possible. I so appreciate all the food for thought.

How to Sharpen a Knife with a Whetstone

Always submerge a whetstone in water until there are no visible air bubbles before using. This can take 10 to 45 minutes, depending on the whetstone.

    1. Position the whetstone horizontally, coarse-side up, on a damp towel to prevent sliding.
    2. Lay upper portion of blade's sharp edge against surface of the whetstone, near its left end. Tilt blade 20 degrees, with sharp edge in contact with the stone. Slide sharp edge to right, across the stone, applying pressure with help from your free hand. At the same time, move knife toward top edge of stone so that blade's lower edge comes in contact with stone by the time you reach its right end.
    3. To work on blade's other side, start at the whetstone's right end and tilt blade in the opposite direction. Repeat sharpening 10 times on each side.
