I hope this helps :) Thanks for using HOMETALK for answers.
Re staining is just that you would apply new stain usually a darker color or if you want light all old stain must be sanded off. Refacing is changing the surface or style even replacing the doors with new doors.
Resurfacing means that a laminate or wood veneer is applied over the surfaces of the cabinets. You keep the framework, but usually replace the doors and drawer fronts. Restaining cabinets means sanding down the existing wood cabinets and applying a different color stain.
Resurfacing is replacing the front of the cabinets.Staining is simply staining your exsisting cabinets

Restaining would be the least expensive way to change up the look. You can go lighter or darker. It will require some work and cleanup, but well worth it. Refacing can be costly, but by all means get quotes. Go with what you really want, you'll be happy in the long run. Best of luck.
Restaining: removing original stain down to bare wood and re staining showing the grain of the wood. Refacing: putting a layer of laminate, wood veneer, or some other product to give the cabinets a specific look.
