How can I increase the nitrogen in my soil in a flower pot?
Do I have to dump all the soil from my flower pots for the Winter, or?
Winter, or can I just remove part of the top layer?
Hi Mary. I either keep the soil in the pots for the winter or add it to my garden. The soil I keep in the pots I dump into a garden wagon and then I add more potting soil and compost and mix it well.
You can recycle the soil combined with fresh soil for next season
I throw it in my compost bin, soil, plants and all. Mix it in, give it time to compost, and I'm good to go next time I need to add some to a planting.
I toss in compost or just toss, no nutrients left in soil.
I save this soil, add fertilizer and about 1/3 to 1/2 new soil. Nothing wrong with this soil, you don't replace everything in your garden every year. If the nutrients are depleted, just read them. This way every few years all is replaced. The part you take out, I use in the garden directly, when planting a new plant. I do gardening on a pretty big scale. No way could I throw out all the soil! With huge pots it may be even les that I replace. Fertilize with a liquid fertilizer at least monthly anyway all summer.
