My son in law used Homax ceiling repair to do a small repair for me. It came out good and simple to use.

Your homeowners insurance should cover repairs. I would have the popcorn removed (after its tested for asbestos) and the ceiling repaired.

If you can't get help from your homeowners insurance, have your popcorn tested for asbestos. If it is asbestos free, you can remove it by spraying with water, (a new bug sprayer filled with water works perfect) and scrape it down. You will want to have emptied the room and put plastic down on the floors and over windows and doorways before starting the job.

Then cut out bad drywall, patch, retexture if you want texture, and paint.

If you want to just repair the sections damaged, follow the above advice, including testing for asbestos, only just do the damaged area. then rent a hopper to apply the popcorn texture before painting.

If you test positive for asbestos, you will need to pay a removal service to remove your popcorn ceiling. I know it sounds tempting to do it yourself but disturbing asbestos creates serious health risks to all who come in the area and is not worth the couple of dollars saved. The disposal of asbestos has to be done by a licensed company and requires dumping permits.

    Hope that helps
