I just made a rope basket. What product can I use to add shine?

I would like to keep the natural look of the rope but want to give it a high shine.

I know that you can use Mod Podge on rope, so I would go to a craft store and see if they make one that has a glossy finish!

Is the basket solid or pliable? If its pliable, I wouldn't put any coating on it as it will just crack and ruin all of your beautiful work!

If it's solid you could spray it with a clear polyurethane. I would give it a light spray and let dry and then continue with light coats until it has quit soaking in and creates a clear shiny coating.

You'll have to seal the rope since anything you put on there is going to soak in. Try spraying it with clear Krylon or clear lacquer then using a clear gloss to make it shine. It may take several applications depending on the shine you want.

  • They sell spray sealer in flat, matte and high gloss, might be something to consider or look into.

Just a thought but you might even be able to use shoe or boot polish

Paint over the rope with Decoupage.

I would not think of Rope as being shiny. I have never seen shiny Rope. Post a picture after spraying.

Gloss mod podge will work, but it will take several coats. Be sure to let dry completly before adding another coat.

Always use a decent coconut oil; a small jar will do & keep the remaining under your sink for polishing ‘everything’; it also is a dust retarder.. So thickly rub in with polish clean cloths in a continued round circular way with your coconut oil.. do this three times, let sit overnight~ if you desire place another coat on the next day. Allow for 24 hours then with a shine spray clear paint give it one good coat... Let dry 3 days before using. TIP; when things start looking dull, which will take awhile, polish just once with coconut oil... Use coconut oil on leather, woods, plastics, floors; just about anything but the rule is to always use correct clean cloths.. You will never see your handbags looking so great too & for one natural product one does not require to put their precious things into the hands of chemical products//as that WILL damage something; that something could be you!

Much Respect,& safe crafting & cleaning:)))

Clear spray acrylic works wonders, I use it on cornucopias and dried flowers
