I would shampoo then put condtioner in it and use a wide tooth comb and comb the hair out while the conditioner is in their hair. Then rinse. Once out of the shower I would use a detangling spray and comb through with a wide tooth comb! I know Johnson & Johnson makes a good detangling spray!

Franny800 Hello. This first video is exactly the way my mother had to do my sister's hair almost every morning ... first begin with gently thinning down the knot with your fingers while working in conditioner, then begin from the bottom and while holding the hair in your fingers with one hand begin combing it downward while moving the comb upward:

Make a mix of water and apple cider vinegar to use as a conditioner. Use 2 cups distilled water and 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar. Mix put in a bottle and use as you would normally use a conditioner. Let it sit in your hair for a few minutes then rinse. I have been doing this for awhile now and it really helps get the tangles out of my curly hair.

Take your brush or comb and start at the bottom of the hair and brush small portions at a time. When the bottom is all brushed go up a little and brush it out and do that all the way up. By doing it this way as you brush it out it gets rid of most tangles so you don't have to hurt the child head. If its really bad use baby oil and do the same steps. Good luck. Hope this helps.
