first... they don't like water on their leaves. They don't like wet soil. Best thing is clay pot filled w African violet soil that sits on a saucer with water so hydros pressure will water the plant..(that means dry clay pot and soil will drink up the water) watch growth direction for sunlight.. usually they don't like direct sun

I know they are supposedly sensitive to water on the leaves and direct sun. However, I have several African Violets on my patio in the shade. I actually water them with the hose and, yes the leaves get wet. I used to have them in the house and treated them carefully, but I ran out of room. They do very well outside in the shade and they have had to be divided many times. They seem happy. I have never fed them. I guess they have good potting soil. They are several years old and I haven't done anything special with them. I started several new plants when I accidently break off a leaf. I put the stem in water. Before you know it, it grows roots and can be potted. Good luck.

Before I ran out of room, I had over 400 AVs. Extreme!!! They ask little and give big! I had all of mine equipped with self-watering wicks and kept them sitting in trays filled with gravel. 400 plants take a lot of time to water, so I went to an AV nursery to learn what I could. The water was actually a very mild solution of AV fertilizer. I had booms ALL the time. They grew in a south facing window and others were under lights. Don't let hot sun hit them - early morning sun is great. Have fun!!

I thank you so much for the information. I wish we had an AV nursery around here in Jacksonville, Fl. Here's hoping my small arrangements end up like yours. Thanks again.
