I painted a few countertops. The easiest was with Krylon spray paint. It lasted till I replaced it, almost 15 years later, and no problem with water. I used it on my kitchen counter and ceramic tile backsplash too. I had a spot which was a little less glossy, but that's it. I took a chance since it was a new product at the time, and there were no recommendations for it. The paint really did fuse to the counter. It is not recommended on cultured marble.

I have also used primer, paint and top poly coat. It looked good but when it was wet, the spot would go white until it dried again. If you often have puddles, I wouldn't go that route.

There are kits made specifically for counters now, like Counter transformations. I would probably try that today.

You can also put a granite veneer on them:

Depending on what type of countertops you have......If they are laminate, you can buy a kit to refinish them at your local home center. Just follow the instructions to achieve a new look.
