How can we free ourselves of annoying Swallows, the birds?

Every spring we can count on these annoying birds to come, build nests and act as though our front and back porch belong to them, flying close to anyone that goes near the porch, protecting their young. To my surprise it is against the law to kill them. Please help us!

Put drops of blue Dawn dish detergent all along the areas that they are. It worked amazingly well when I did it this spring. They were trying to build nests on a tiny ledge in my front door overhang. After I did this, they never came back this season.

Of course you can't kill them they are a beautiful bird that eats a ton of mosquitoes and other insects on the wing and they can soar like no other bird; we have a lot of and I love watching them fly around and when they tweet at each other its enchanting.
