All bulbs should only be planted or replanted in the fall. Dig the crowded irises and separate the tubular roots by hand. You may have to break some apart. Be sure to water well and plant as deep as they were in the soil before digging them. You may cut the tops back but leave a few inches of the tops on the bulbs. Irises are hardy things and they should do well.

MY MOTHER ALWAYS DUG THE ROOTS UP AND BROKE THEM APART THEN REPLANTED . SHE HAD SOME BEAUTIFUL IRIS IN SO MANY COLORS I COULDN'T COULDN'T COUNT THEM ALL. SHE ALSO HAD SOME DOUBLES . THEY HAVE SO MANY NEW COLORS AT THE PRESENT TIME THAT IT JUST BOGGLES THE MIND. WISH I WAS ABLE TO PLANT FLOWERS AND A VEGETABLE GARDEN AGAIN. IT'S DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO DO SO WHEN YOU'RE DISABLED, ON OXYGEN 24/7 AND N A POWER WHEELCHAIR LIVING IN AN APARTMENT COMPLEX ON THE SECOND FLOOR. OH ! WELL I GUESS THAT'S LIFE.
