Neighbors removed a diseased big cottonwood tree on the edge of our yards. The remaining roots which are large and run under our yard have started sprouting small cottonwood shoots along those roots. How do we kill the underlying roots to stop this process ?

there is a product that you pour on the remaining stump. Hopefully that will kill it

  • Cut them down to ground level and drown in vinegar repeatedly. Vinegar is cheap. Will need to reapply after rain.

You would need to kill the stump. Hollow out the center of it (bowl shape) and fill it with salt or something like Bayer Brush Killer.

My solution was to cut of the offenders close to the ground and paint the cut portion with weed killer like round up. If you brush it on it will not harm the grass, just get sucked down to the roots of the new trees. Drill holes in the parent stump and pour it into the holes to kill the roots of the parent tree. Despite the fact that the tree was cut down, as long as the roots are alive it will continue to send out new shoots. Kill the roots and you will have no more shoots from the parent tree.

WE ALWAYS USED SOME USED MOTOR OIL MIXED WITH A LITTLE DIESEL FUEL ( TO MAKE IT PENETRATE THE STUMP BETTER ) AND JUST BRUSH OR SPRAY IT ON THE STUMP .
