Repurposing draw-leaf table into crafts table.

I have an old draw-leaf table that is too big for our kitchen. I would like to use it as a deep crafts table so I can store craft items directly on table. I need to have a continuous surface so small craft items don't slip into the cracks where the leaves extend the table. I was thinking about some kind of padding covered by a hard surface but I don't really know where to start. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Oh okay. I am sorry but I didn't know what kind of table a draw-leaf was. I thought you meant something else. Sorry. So now that I have the right information, here are some things you might consider.

Set the table up and perhaps leave one end off. You say it's too big, so this might help. Then cut a thin piece of plywood and cover it. Unless it's different heights, this should work. And yes, I would put something over it like a padded tablecloth. I hope this helps more than my last response.

An old oil cloth table cloth would give you a continuous work surface and be beautiful at the same time.

Thanks for your response. I'll look for one.

Thanks again. My solution combines the answer from you and another hometalker. I will get thin plywood to cover it and then add oilcloth as a cover. The plywood part sounds easy. It took several days to find the oilcloth I liked. So many of those I found had large or busy designs. I didn't think this would work because I am focussing on jewelry making so wanted something that would not compete with my finding small jewelry findings that have wandered off. I finally found one in a color I like with only subtle swirls in it.
