My husband made two X's out of 2x4's, one on each end, joining the X's about 5 feet up. In between the upper part of the X's, resting on the wood, he put a 10 foot long , 1/2 inch iron pipe (from the plumbing area). This rack was really heavy duty and held winter coats, skiing, snowmobile, etc., clothing without issue!

You could also put a shower tension rod between a stackable washer and dryer (or cabinet) and the wall.
