Need ideas for a breakfast table!

I'd like to preface by saying I'm a newbie at all this because I've never lived anywhere where I could complete projects. In a month I will be moving out of a studio and into a really great sized Victorian styled apartment and have tons of space to play! I think this table has potential but I'm worried about the cheap wood it's made out of. As you can see, it has a this wood layer over (I think) plywood. I have a sander, but i dont think this can be sanded. I'd like to put cushions on the chairs once complete but im kind of lost on what to do with this. We don't have a lot of money right now and I'd like to utilize this to be a little breakfast table for the screen porch. Any advice would be appreciated!!

    Congratulations on the upgrade!

Rough it up with low grit sand paper, Paint i t then if you can freehand paint go for it or stencils. Then use a top quality sealer on it make sure it is food grade safe. chairs for now put chair cushions on. Down the road you can cover. If you have a JoAnn fabrics in your area, Sign up for mailings they have great sales. Plus you get bonus cpns to use. It all helps. As well sign up for Michaels cpns in your email box. They come weekly.

    That all helps

    Good Luck!

I love the set. I think I would begin by replacing the top with a really good piece of wood. Even though the drop have curved corners, it would look just as good if they are squared off. With the proper measurements, most hardware stores will cut the wood to your specifications. You could remove and reuse the hardware (hinges). As for the base, I would clean, lightly sand and paint with chalk paint. You can't go wrong with chalk paint. It's probably veneer. You can paint the legs and chairs and just throw a pretty cloth over the table top

In the picture it looks like medium density fiberboard ( M.D.F. ) with some kind of laminate on it. I haven't had any experience working with M.D.F. might try looking on youtube for information about what you're wanting to do?
