How can I determine if tile floor is vinyl squares or asbestos? If asbestos, I know the difficulties removing it. Can I put pavers over it? Paint it? It dates the whole place!!!

You would have to have it tested by a prof. As long as all the tiles are in place and not broken or have lose pieces you can cover it with whatever material the pros recommend to put tile over it. I was told as long as you do not disturb it, you're ok. Removing it requires a pro.

  • Buy a test kit at any hardware or home improvement store.

If you place flooring on top, be aware of elevation changes and any tripping hazard it might cause.

This is under the state EPA. If it's asbesto, it has to be removed by strict standard (At owners expense). It has to be removed from your home. The tile can not be just covered. Older homes were built with asbestos materials.

Asbestos canbe left in place as long as it is not brittle and breaking. A homeowner is allowed to remove asbestos if done correctly. You must keep the tile damp while removing, place in a 10 mil plastic bag and seal it, repeat with another bag. You must dispose of a a hazmat landfill. Then using TSP scrap up the glue it was put down with. This must be disposed of the same way with the tile. It is IMPORTANT that every thing stays damp during removal or you will release the asbestos fibers into the air, any breathing this will inhale the asbestos, it will kill you in a very slow painful death. It shouldn't cost much to have a pro remove it for you. Disposal is expensive. Try to find your tile on line. After 1972 no tile was made with asbestos. And yes i did work in asbestos removal.

Asbestos tiles are grade 1 and usually don't have to have the guys in space suits show up. Insulation is another matter, though. That does need to be professionally removed if asbestos. Check with the building code department of your city. They can tell you about homes built the same time as yours and what's inside.
