It's been wrapped in a plastic pkg. Would love to save it permanently. Is there something I can apply to preserve it.

My friend made me a gingerbread tree and she varnished it. We were able to save it for years. Just make sure you let people know not to bite it
Unless you want it on display, I would use one of those seal a meal machines and vacuum seal it to preserve it.
Take a picture, it will last longer!
Maybe dunk it in wax maybe. Or a glass box
