A favorite basket gets filled season in and season out with different elements and decorations to welcome the changes throughout the year! See how you can use your favorite objects to decorate for the changing seasons and holidays.
I made the basket last fall in a basket making class I took. The basket was designed to be a satchel, with long straps so that you could hang it over your shoulder for carrying. But when I saw my teacher's original photos, I knew I wanted to use this basket to hang on the wall and decorate for each season or holiday.
So last fall, I filled it with a grapevine wreath, some artificial fall leaves and flowers, and a cute wooden star. I wrapped the wreath with a string of wooden beads to pick up the natural elements in my basket and in the wooden star. I thought it looked good for a quick decorating project.
For Christmas, I bought a larger wooden star, painted it white, and used that for the central element in my basket. I filled the rest of the basket with red and green tree ornaments, a sparkly silver tree, and some berries and pine. At the last minute, I added my little wooden star that I had used during the fall. With the exception of the big star, I had the rest of these decorations already on hand.
After Christmas, for the late winter season, I kept the wooden star but removed the Christmas decorations. Instead I used some eucalyptus to fill my basket. I like how the eucalyptus keeps with the winter colors, but isn't Christmas-y.

BTW, is this eucalyptus real? I bought it in a bunch at the craft store. It smells wonderful, but has a waxy feel to the leaves. I've never known if the stuff you see in craft stores is real or fake?

Sadly, I never took a photo of my spring/summer basket display. Which is weird because it was one of my favorites - it included a little birdhouse. I'll probably recycle some of the elements for next spring, so I'll post photos then.
Which brings us to this fall! I've just finished filling the basket for autumn and I'm proud not to have bought anything new to finish this display. As you can see, I've used the same leaves and flowers that I used last fall. I've also recycled the eucalyptus for this display. To complete my arrangement, I've added some fall berries and a little artificial pumpkin. Again, I had all these items already on hand, so this decorating project cost $0!

I'm rather happy with this year's fall basket. I hope you like it too!
