I've been thinking of ways I can use up the massive pile of recycled decking we have stacked against the house. Not only is it a giant eyesore, but it’s probably a breeding ground for redback spiders (or worse … but I dare not say the s.n.a.k.e. word out loud) and it’s time for the timber to go. And yet, I’m a wood hoarder. I can’t just throw it away, I have to use it somehow. While surfing Pinterest, I stumbled across Ana White’s birdhouse plans and then it was GAME ON! I started by cutting my pieces out. One of the changes I made to the plans was that I varied the height measurements (so that all the birdhouses were slightly different heights).
(Each birdhouse has this simple set of seven pieces.) As I don’t have an air nailer, I had to predrill every nail hole (otherwise the decking would split) then glue and nail all the pieces together. The assembly took ages! But man was it worth it.
How frickin cute are they?!!
At first I was going to leave them their natural timber colour. After I’d assembled them I was hit by the urge to paint them bright, candy colours. (I don’t know where this urge came from – it is so unlike me. The only thing colourful about me is my language.) Some of the birdhouses have a little dowel perch. Others don’t.
Some have ladders! Are you dying from the cuteness??
(Here I am just casually sitting amongst birdhouses like a crazy-lady.)
I should probably mention that I am under no illusion that these birdhouses will actually attract real birds to nest in them. They are purely for decoration!
I’ve still got more birdhouses to assemble but I really wanted to get this first batch finished and show you all. When they’re all finished I’ll add them to my growing collection of market stall merchandise. October markets, here I come!
