I pick mine when the stem closest to the avocado turns brown, it will still be hard. You can leave out on your counter top to ripen, it will take a few days or you can help, speed it up by putting it inside a paper bag and placing it inside a cupboard, oven (just make sure you don't turn the oven on) and it will ripen quicker. To test for doneness, it should give a teeny bit when pressed but not be soft. You can cut a tiny,
triangle from one of the ends and see if it's ready. If it's still too hard, put the piece back on the avocado and wrap in Saran Wrap and wait another day.
Listen to Ana! Avocados do not ripen on the tree. You must pick them for them to ripen.
