I would get some Bar Keeper's Friend and scrub it.
I did the same thing to my toilet, so I plunged the water down, placed old wash cloths around the gray areas and drenched them with clorox -- STRAIGHT. Yes, straight. After a few hours, I checked and the gray was gone! Hallelujah!
Using a damp Magic Eraser sponge, rub baking soda into the gray patches. If you don't have a Magic Eraser, use a regular sponge and dampen it with hydrogen peroxide. Let the baking soda sit on the gray area for about fifteen minutes before rinsing away. Alternatively, you could use Pfaltzgraff Stoneware and Porcelain Cleaner.
But please don't use anything steel wool again! It is too abrasive, and can wear the enamel off the porcelain.
Comet cleanser should also work to get that gray out.
Or pumice stone. Flush and use some bleach in the toilet. That might remove the grey and in the future use pumice stone to clean it. The pumice stone is found in a hardware store and is not expensive. Sometimes you can even find it in a grocery store household supply section.
