Larger local garden centers should have a selection of dwarf evergreen trees. These grow slow and are low-maintenance.

Ilex compacta Japanese is a slow-growing evergreen shrub that sports small, dark green leaves. It can grow close to other plants of its type, which makes it a good hedging plant, which is perfect for landscaping. The Ilex can grow to be about three to four feet tall and is very hardy against cold weather. It is also tolerant during times of drought, which adds to its appeal.
