Operation Band Aid

Our current house that we now own started out as a rental for us. The kitchen was such an eyesore that needed some major attention but what do you do when it's not yours? Our landlord was pretty cool and we had always had the intentions of purchasing it but on the in case we didn't want to invest a lot of money into it. The counters were this hideous stark white laminate that showed every single crumb, red Kool- Aid rings, required constant wiping & bleaching- basically a mother's worst nightmare!
The cabinets on the other hand were just as awful and a super high gloss over kill of 80s oak but that fix will be addressed in my next post!😄 The Prep included taping off the edges and a very thorough cleaning.
We just happened to be walking through Home Depot and spotted this Rustoleum transformation countertop kit on clearance for $99. I think it was normally $200 but you could prob find it less than that on Amazon or Ebay. We figured it looked pretty easy and claimed to be durable and in our very thrifty budget. After countertops are cleaned and sanded you start with the base coat which is a colored adhesive. Simply paint/or roll on for an even coat. Then you sprinkle on the flecks with the handheld sprinkler provided in the kit. You will let this set overnight.
The next day you sweep up the excess- sand and smooth the surface with the provided sander. The final step is to paint/roll on the clear protective coat. That will take a couple of hours to dry.
It made such a huge difference! So easy to clean, durable, and love the stone like texture of my new countertops!
Here is a sneak peak of the final outcome with the updated cabinets. The color of our kit was called dessert sand and had great reviews! I do not recommend the charcoal color- many said it looks like wet tar. We have plans for a full kitchen remodel next Christmas but have enjoyed our band aid makeover for now making the kitchen a little more updated and a lot more tolerabl! 😄

That is so awesome! Thanks for sharing this!! Do you have any ideas for applying it to the backsplash that continues up the wall from the countertops?? Would love to do this.

I had this professionally done to my 90's laminate countertops in the kitchen & two bathrooms 7 years ago for a cost of about $200 and they're still looking great! It's a nice, quick inexpensive fix to update those laminate countertops.
