Glazing Tile?

Kris
by Kris
I just moved into a condo. I cannot afford to completely remodel the kitchen. It has granite countertops, stainless appliances and I am going to reface the cabinets. The kitchen has a ceramic (I think) backsplash that looks a little dull to me. Can I put something on the tile (glaze?) to give it a shine that will make it look more contemporary?

OK this isn't ceramic tile, this actually looks like faux brick. I think it would be a little hard to put a shine on it, but it is possible. I don't think it would look right. Actually, go to Lowes or Home Depot and look at theirs and ask someone there if you can add a shine. Hope this helps : )

If it's truly faux brick, baby oil will do it. If not, try Armor-All.

    I like it that way!

High gloss polycrylic ! Just paint over it with the poly. It will also seal and preserve and make wiping it down easier.

@Kara Spurlock Thanks. That is what I was thinking would prob work. Will see. I am refacing the cabinet doors but don't want to remove all the backsplash and want to make look a bit more contemporary/glossy.

That style of back splash isn't supposed to be shiny. It looks like your granite does have a high gloss to it, if you try to "Paint" over the backsplash its shine wont match the granite and its going to look like it was painted. Also if this has already been treated with a stone/grout sealer (which comes in matte/invisible) it WILL NOT accept another treatment. Best to leave it as is or rip it out.

Another idea - to make it look more contemporary - use sheet metal/ backsplash and go right over it. Check with a local design center (not home depot or lowes) for ideas.

Thats a product called Z-Brick..It is imitation brick but it is very porous..Its made to look like old used bricks..Its actually fairly thin and just the face of a brick..Shine wouldnt look to good and i can tell you oil will stain it and draw dirt...

If shiny is the goal, then polyacrylic is water based and will only make it shine and deal it from dirt.
