carpet cleaning

I have new (5mos old) carpeting in my family & living rooms. On her last visit, my daughter's dog was scooting! Now I want to clean the carpets, however the warranty says to only use water - no chemical or soaps. I really don't want to do both carpets on my hands & knees! Anyone have any suggestions hoe to get them clean. They're a mid-grey color. Thanks

I think I'm confused why your warranty prohibits chemicals or soaps. I mean I sort of get it but it doesn't seem practical. If you can't use anything but water, how do they expect you to remove tough-to-get-out spots or stains that are bound to eventually happen? Nevertheless.... do you have your own carpet cleaner? If so, I would use a mixture of water and a little white vinegar in it since white vinegar cleans but does not fall into the "chemical" or "soap" category. When I clean my carpets (also gray), I use far less soap than the label recommends and I also put a little white vinegar in my rinse water tank to help cut any soap residue that might be left behind during the cleaning process. If you don't have your own carpet cleaner, you can rent one by the day at places like Lowes, Home Depot and even some grocery stores in my area have them. Just don't buy the soaps to put in them and use the vinegar and water instead.

I agree with Shari. I would say use a mild handsoap with warm water to get the stains out. But you can't treat everything with just water. However, if you are really worried about the warranty, try warm water and see if it does the trick. If not, let them know!

Thanks @Shari & @Jill Klein I do have a carpet cleaner & I'll try the vinegar and see what happens.

I would consider spraying white vinegar on the area. Vinegar kills germs and freshens. You could dilute it with water if you want. Spray, let it sit a few minutes and then blot. Just a suggestion.

Steam cleaning your carpets is the best (and probably what the mfg recommends) you can buy a bissel from Home depot or rent one. What happens with soaps - is just like your hair or laundry - it leaves a residue behind, which actually attracts dirt and makes them appear to get dirty faster!

Peroxide, baking soda, and water in a spray bottle.

@Jeri We always use Nature's Miracle (Petco, PetSmart, etc.) but that is "spot specific" vs. doing an entire rug.

Spray area with vinegar - Vinegar is great - the acidity breaks down the chemicals in animal poo. Sprinkle baking soda on top to absorb the vinegar. The neutral pH in baking soda helps break down the odor. When dry, simply vacuum. If that doesn't work on the stain or smell, use 1 cup vinegar in your carpet cleaner and add a couple of drops of an essential oil to make for a nice clean scent. I sometimes add 1/4 cup Gain detergent in my cleaner because they make such awesome scents and it fills the house just as well as essential oils. Hot or cold water does not matter - it's the combination of what you use on the stain - the simpler, the better and safer for your carpet. Good luck! BTW - do not use peroxide - that will leach the color from any carpet.

We use Odo Ban to clean after our pets. Of course test in a small area first.

Thank you all for your suggestions. This is stain protection information from the website about the carpeting: "Breakthrough stain and soil protection built into every fiber no topical chemicals added. Built in stain and soil protection will never walk off, wash off or wear off. Most stains can be cleaned with just hot water. Warranted against stains like pet urine (cat and dog) mustard, hot coffee and red wine" When I purchased it, the saleswoman said that you could only use water or the warranty would be voided. After what you've all said, I've decided to have someone come in and clean them - but not until the snow is gone & I see grass in my backyard.
  • Warm water and Oxi-fresh as directed on the container. It's a miracle.
