Glass top

by Milagro C
I recently purchased a 35 x 40 piece of glass to replace the one that I broke . It was the top of my kitchen table. Unfortunately, I cannot use it and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I can do with such a large, expensive piece of glass. It is about 3/4 inches thick.

List it for sale on your local Craigslist. You will likely not get what you paid for it but in my opinion, if you can't use it, recouping some of what you paid for it is better than having it sit around unused and taking up space.

Photo table top display. I covered a bar top in our pool house with favorite photos, lots of them, and covered them with lexan, but would have loved to have had access to a nice, thick piece of glass like this. There are dremel attachments and other tools for cutting glass to customize size. I've purchased glass at Lowes that they cut to size for free. You may be able to ask them if they would cut for you, and if not, if they could offer advice on where you could get it cut to your desired project. Also, if you have a shelving unit sitting around, you could turn it into a charming little glass front cupboard by adding simple frame from wood scraps or old window. Just add hinges. To take it further, you could easily add (repurposed/or purchased) 4 decorative, screw-in, short table legs @ Lowes or Home Depot. Install a cheap under counter puck light for added coolness, if displaying momentos or fav collection. Hope this helps get your creative juices going. :)
  • If you have kids-I would make a photo collage of them, their artwork, and memorable pics and mount the pics on poster board taped together the size of glass and then mount on wall with mirror holders in their room or playroom. You could also frame it out with wood, legos, or toys that they choose and have some fun...good luck

Frame it and if you have outside yard/garden area, use colored flower stones with epoxy glue and decorate with either pattern design or abstract design. Looks gorgeous with light coming through. Hand securely and away from high traffic or play area.

Is there a glass company near you? They will cut it into smaller piece or pieces if you could use those as toppers on smaller pieces of furniture.

Paint or stencil a special saying on it and hang it.

Either repurpose it for hanging a large art piece, perhaps a DIY collage or collection of favorite family pictures, or have it cut to fit smaller items, like a hearth and tables. If you have it cut, be sure that the edges are rounded (I still have a scar over my eye from when I was two and fell into a glass coffee table top).

Create an antique mirror. Spray a fine mist of vinegar before painting. Spray the back with Krylon mirror spray paint. Many thin coats. The vinegar keeps the paint from adhering in "used" spots. When you have it spray painted. rub slightly in the vinegar areas and then spray the back with a black or chocolate brown paint. Look at sites which show how to make Mercury glass. Antique it and then frame and hang. These "old" antique mirrors are very hard to find. They add a great feeling to a room. I sell these types of old mirrors as often as I have time to make them.

If it is tempered safety glass it cannot be cut or altered. But if it is plate glass it can be cut down where you can repurpose it in a few smaller pieces.
