Need ideas on "sprucing up" this nightstand set

by Jenny Hughey
I am currently planning on painting this nightstand set green with chalk paint, but I have no idea if there's anything else I can do to this set to make it look less "cheap" (even though it is..lol. It's going to go with this dresser, which will also be painted with chalk paint.
Any ideas?

I'd glue some scroll work pieces to the night stand similar to the dresser before painting, make them look like a set. Home Depot has a lot of the fancy trim work, you just glue (the best) or tack them on. And maybe close up the "toe kick" on the night stand with wood that would take some of the "cheap" look away. Please post picks when you finish, would love to see the end results.

@Sherry M. Agree the styles are too far apart. Maybe the bottom portion could be sawed off and feet added that are similar to those on the dresser.

Oh great idea. I had no clue Home Depot had things like that. I think I need to go browse. Will see about closing up the toe kick part too. Thanks!! My bedroom will be my first real furniture project. It'll be a while, but I'll definitely post pics when I'm done.

@Jenny Hughey Yes, I love Home Depot I can spend hours in there, I'm sure you can find all you want there to do any of the ideas we've suggested...Enjoy!

You may also try changing out the door pull to a more vintage look, they have them at Home Depot as well.

I would use the molding idea on the front, paint it first because it helps for placement. You can also buy feet at home depot if you wanted to enclose the bottom and side trim (think skinny dowel). On the top, rather than trim pieces, think frame to go on top which would already be assembled and easier to work with. Again, paint the pieces you are attaching first so any spot you might not be able to get to because of the glue will be a non issue and the painted pieces will be easier to place visually. I don't think it is necessary to match all of the elements, just a few. I would love to see whatever you decide, please post.

Definitely changing the pull. I have seen some interesting designs at anthropoglie that I may use for all my pieces in the bedroom..or at least that same "family" of pulls.

Feet is a good idea Opal. I like that. Maybe I can find something similar to the bottom of the dresser. I think I'd have to cut something down to use them though, because the nightstand is the perfect height now. Thanks for the advice of painting the trim pieces beforehand. I hadn't considered the glue might make it hard to paint afterwards. You think a frame to go on top of the dresser's surface? Interesting idea. I'll have to measure it..would stop items from falling off the edge too. hmm.. Such great ideas! Thanks!

Check your closest Habitat for Humanity store or a Resale store for a cabinet door the size of this door - could probably find one for $1 - $3 if you can find the right size. Also, if you'd like to add legs, as someone suggested (a very nice idea), you could take the top off this cabinet and cut the upper sides off to allow for the height of the legs, and probably find a little larger top (perhaps another cabinet door) or a pretty wood tray to use as a top. If you could find someone to cut a fancy trim piece like the one on the bottom of the dresser, to add between the new legs, that would really dress it up. Looks like there are lots of possibilities, and we'll all be anxious to see what you end up doing. I have a couple of these "cheap" stands too, and I'm talking myself into remodeling jobs too. :-) Happy repurposing!!

@Gladys I didn't even think of changing out the door..hmm. I wonder how standard this size is. Time to measure everything! I guess I just can't "picture" this with some of these ideas. I think I need to browse the projects people have done with all your ideas in mind. Thanks!!

I'd go with the color paint you're using, and add a stencil in stark black. Depending on the stencil size, I would either change out the hardware for black or an antique bronze. I love pieces like this nightstand because they are blank canvasses. Another thing you can do, if stenciling is not your thing, is use black contact paper (preferable the chalkboard type) and cut out designs that will look like stencils or silhouettes.

Because of how it's built, add molding instead of feet aroung the bottom. It will help weight it down and take the toe kick out of the picture. Definately add a stenciled design or special words.

get 1"x3" and a jig saw..cut a piece for bottom that matches scroll on bottom of dresser..add some little pieces from home depot..then take handles off spackel holes .. re drill top corners ..replace all ...have knobs same as dresser paint all three pieces to match... if little night stands have that slick finish paint first with kilz...
    • Jenny Hughey Jenny Hughey on Mar 08, 2014
@Brendalee Perryman Might be a little advanced for me to cut the wood myself, but I get what you mean, I'll look and see if there is anything premade like that..

Love all these ideas above. I agree about filling in the bottom rather than feet. If you finish it with a cute basket or bin on the shelf it will look totally custom. Can't wait to see the after!
    • Jenny Hughey Jenny Hughey on Mar 08, 2014
@Me Myself & DIY Oh YEAH! I didn't think of the basket idea, that could be so cute! Thanks!

New pull hobby lobby. Stencil or chevron. Will look great. Good luck. Might add some wood molding before you paint.

Add a backing to the open upper, open part and either paint it the same colour, or use a piece of self stick wallpaper or wrapping paper in complimentary colours for visual effect. I'd avoid doing the scrollwork on the big cabinet drawer, as the dresser only has it on the smaller drawers, and it wouldn't match... If you changed the upper portion to a drawer then put the scrollwork on the new drawer to match...

Paint, stencil and trim and others have suggested. Pick a trim that compliments the dresser so the two pieces don't look so mismatched. New hardware will add character to the piece. Good luck. Post pictures when you are done.

I would give it a new home and look for a different one at a yard sale. I like to put small tables in my closet to put my cloth on it. The small drawers are good socks. I basket would be great to place things in where there is an opening. It is just so different from your other piece you have in the room. I also think it would be better to have a table that is a little larger and with out the opening to hide the wires.
    • Jenny Hughey Jenny Hughey on Mar 08, 2014
@Patty Morgan Yeah I wonder if it's so different that it may not work. I'll consider closing off the back like some suggested and see if the scrollwork changes the "look"
  • Diana Diana on Mar 08, 2014
I would distress all the pieces and use a glaze, then add interesting hardware. The dresser is going to look great, but I'd paint the trim on it a different color that way it will stand out.
  • Sonja Sonja on Mar 08, 2014
Your dresser is beautiful...I also would give your nite stand a new home and look for a good yard sale for something a little closer to the shape and style of your dresser...
    • Jenny Hughey Jenny Hughey on Mar 08, 2014
@Sonja I do wonder if the style is too different..will see if the scrollwork and closing off the back helps..
  • Jenny Hughey Jenny Hughey on Mar 08, 2014
I think the molding will help it tie in to the other pieces too..will look and see what I come up with! Thanks!

If you are a reader in bed use printed titles of your favorite bedtime books on it. Many ways you can apply it. It just makes it say that it's your nightstand and what you love to do along with a hot cup of tea and warm blanket .

    Cute idea!

well, I'd change the handles to match and I'd try to put on the same features (you could go to a shop where they make it for you, or you could make a mold yourself, in plaster or cut it out of balsa wood, it's so soft and easy to work with)

Hardware can make a big difference. Find wood Hardware and paint it creatively.

why dont you saw the top off, make a nice padded cushion put some velcro on the back of the cushion &the top to which you have sorn off ,and have it as a nice footstool. and the cupboard, use as,its purpose,or turn it on its side, hang it on the wall with the door handle at the top to pull down, it would be good in a craft room, or with a mirror on top & store hair products in, or also with the mirror,to be used as a phone desk to store phone books or to use as a medicine cabinet with a mirror on top, then with all this in mind decorate have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take the door off the nightstand and find a basket to fit the space
  • Jenny Hughey Jenny Hughey on Mar 09, 2014
To fill the upper space? Yeah, I hope something like that fits..doing measurements today! Thanks!
  • Dawn Fryer Dawn Fryer on Mar 09, 2014
Take a narrow picture frame and attach to the door for depth. Also I agree about changing the hardware. Try to find or make a oval top for it that is a bit larger also giving depth. Good luck!!!

Add lots of trim molding to hide cheapness and across bottom and under top curved molding and add curvy legs. Then put bright wicker baskets in opening. Either decoupage top and add glass in middle of trim or put pretty tray on top.
