DIY Garden Gate Project

Creating a Life

How did a vintage shelf unit, almost turned sign, become a gate? Come see how it all happened!
The gate, that was a shelf, that was going to be a sign. What??
I picked up this vintage shelf unit at a yard sale for $10.00 about twelve years ago.
Last year, I decided it really wasn't very functional as a shelf unit anymore, and took it apart. I put the boards in my "possibility pile" for a future project.
A few weeks ago, I got them out as I was working on rearranging my living room and started thinking about how to use them as a large sign. {I had screwed old fence boards to the back to hold all the pieces together}
Something just wasn't feeling right about it. I took it apart and laid the pieces on the floor to play around with a new configuration, and decide if I was going to cut some of the pieces.
Sudden inspiration! I shifted the boards around on the floor and realized they were looking sort of like a gate. I screwed all the pieces together from the back.
Added some rustic vintage hardware I had from an antique door and an old toolbox.
And the gate was born!
The last board {the extra wide bottom shelf} I had already made into a sign for the dance area at a friend's country wedding last summer. So the shelf really did get to become a gate AND a sign.
Now it's on my living room wall. I'll have a post up on the blog this week to show how the room came together around this piece.
