I love the cabinets!! Well, the style anyway:) I would definitely paint them a glossy white or black and just add new brushed nickel hardware maybe??? Just a thought. Amazingly just a glossy interior paint will work...maybe not the best of choices for paint, but with a couple coats they will look brand new and beautiful!

I just painted my 6 year old cherry stained cupboards, (hubby protesting) I just prefer painted furniture! I aged them when I was done with the painting, it took about two weeks with primer and two coats of paint, they came out beautiful. I will try to post before and after pics. Painting your cupboards will make a drastic difference in your kitchen, Good luck!

This is the only pic I could find of the cherry cupboards, I love the the Antique white from S&W :-)

I just did this! My cabinets are a different style but they look brand new just with paint. I used a light grey but for yours and to go with your countertop, I think a dark grey would look amazing. I would also replace the wood cornice above the window with something less country. I did this as well over my window to match the feet I added to the bottom of my cabinets and it unified the new look in a great way. http://reposhture.blogspot.com/2014/03/maxilicious-fraternal-twins-kitchen.html

I would paint the cabinets white from S&W and take down the cornice above the window to let more light in. Paint the wood above the cabinets and wall under cabinets that color in the floor tiles, can't tell if it's grey or a light green. Either would look good. Don't forget the primer. Post a picture of what you do please I always like to see the results of what people come up with.

Most of the house is a country style with black tans and burgundy. I was thinking of doing the counters black but maybe I should do the cabinets black glossy with new hardware and then use the tan and creams for the counter so it looks like tile. Black is BOLD but I just may be up for the challenge. Thank you everyone for your input and creativity, I knew I could count on you. Thank you also for your time it was so thoughtful.

I love the white makeover too great job but I live in a world of boyz and greasy toys ( mechanicsville) so white is a nono. I'm 41 and a professional and still get my white pants dirty;)
  • Lori J Lori J on Mar 09, 2014
I love the knotty pine look of the cabinets but I would go white with them as well.
  • MM&D MM&D on Mar 09, 2014
You could go two color. It is a trend these days. If the bottoms were a darker color the kiddos hands won't mess it up and then go a lighter color up top. There are some very nice examples on Houzz if you search by two toned kitchen.

I'd put trim around the edges and paint them white!
  • Marianne Marianne on Mar 10, 2014
I love the style of the cabinets. I agree with painting them a glossy white and aging them around the groove areas. They will look great.

The Lettered Cottage has a fabulous kitchen makeover and the simple solution they've come up with to completely transform similar cabinets is brilliant (also, don't be too afraid of white or even beige just because of messy boys--I feel your pain, btw--as long as the cabinets are primed and painted with a good quality glossy paint, they should be fairly easy to keep clean): http://theletteredcottage.net/tudor-style/

In one of our previous houses we had dark cabinets. But I wanted white, so we took the doors and hardware off and cleaned all the surfaces well. Wipe them down with thinner, lightly sand them. My husband sprayed two coats of Rustoleum outdoor paint for easier cleaning in the future (all done in the garage with plenty of ventilation). When all dry, reattached the same hardware. The white made all the difference. This was several years ago, so I have no pictures. If you have the budget, you can also have the cabinets resurfaced. You can ask Home Depot for estimate. Good luck. Post your after pictures when done.

The blog, Rambling From the Burbs, has a step by step DIY of kitchen cabinet upgrade for cabinets like yours with LOTS OF PICTURES. She used fillers and spray paint and the results are nothing short of spectacular. You can check out her kitchen reveal here: http://ramblingsfromtheburbs.com/2014/01/kitchen-reveal/

I would take down the top part of the cabinets..replace all around the tops of the doors with crown moulding, stagger a couple of cupboards if you can, to give them a more modern look , get new hardware and then paint them cream or white..Good Luck!!!

Your cabinets look a lot like mine did. I simply filled the slat boards with joint compound mixed with white glue (for strength and to prevent cracking in the future), sanded it smooth once dry, then primed and painted the doors. For a bit of added design, I used a mold with plaster of paris and once the pieces were dry, I painted and attached them to the cabinets. The kitchen turned out gorgeous!

I understand you want darker cabinets because of the boys. Maybe just stick to black on the bottom and keep the uppers tan. Your kitchen looks pretty dark.

I have a question for those who paint their cabinets . . . don't they look strange now that they don't match the rest of the trim, windows in the house? My cabinets are the same color as all of the trim in my house, so if I paint them white, don't I have to paint all the trim in the house white as well? That is a big job.

@Jacqui Just like you don't have to have your lipstick match your sweater! Sometimes too matchy matchy is not a good thing.

Thanks, Iva. It's just so scary! lol
  • @Michelle I have been a contractor for 18 years and I have never seen cabinet doors made from the paneling yours are. Painting them will not change that. New cabinet doors and drawer fronts will cost $10 to $30 each from a small local woodworker. And lighting please!
    • Margie*Lee Margie*Lee on Mar 10, 2014
@New Style Kitchen Bath & Patio I totally agree with Michelle! You can have new doors and drawer fronts made and the trim refaced and with new hardware, your cabinets will look brand new and updated. In my opinion, painting them would be a big mistake.

I agree, I would paint them a glossy white. It will brighten up your kitchen too. As far as the trim, if you are going to paint your walls a pretty new color, I would paint the trim in the kitchen white too. My only other suggestions would be to make sure you spend the time doing the prep work.... clean, sand, prime with an oil base primer and paint. This is not going to be a two day job, but if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. Your kitchen will be beautiful. I have painted all kinds of cabinets in three different houses and I have been glad I did every one of them. You can do it.

Hi, take a look at www.amyhowardathome.com and consider painting them with one of her lighter colors. If you kitchen is small, I would stick with the same colors for top and bottom. Clean kids fingerprints off with Simple Green once a week and it will be find. I have dark green cabinets on the bottom of my kitchen and when the sun comes in, the grandkids little oily fingerprints stand out everywhere? Light colors are easier. Amy has a lovely color called Bauhaus Buff which I've use many times. Don't be put off by the quart price..it goes a very long way! If you need advice as you get started, type in your question at the ask Amy section of her website. Good luck!

The cabinets themselves are beautiful! I would remove the cabinets, all the hardware, and sand them. After sanding them you'll have a fresh clean brighter lighter cabinet to brighten your room. If you looking for a country look, paint them a 'country white, white white is just too bright, antique white is too beige, you want a country white, with dark gun metal or black knobs, or even better glass knobs, promise it will be beautiful and your entire kitchen will be better and brighter and more beautiful than ever!
  • Pat Pat on Mar 10, 2014
I was going to suggest new doors and drawer fronts....even by painting them, which would help, IMHO, you would still have the up and down grooves to keep clean. If you do decide to keep what you have, then I would stain them the darkest you can....almost black. New hinges and knobs will help also.
  • Kelly Seifer Kelly Seifer on Mar 10, 2014
These are my old brown cabinets I transformed my whole kitchen from dark dreary to light country bright!
  • Thrifty Treasures Thrifty Treasures on Mar 10, 2014
You also have the option to do open cabinets or shelving on the top and just fill in the cracks or replace the fronts on the bottoms as suggested. Also, what do the inside of the doors look like? If they are flat maybe you could just turn them around to get rid of the grooves???
  • Robin Grabner Robin Grabner on Mar 10, 2014
I would take the doors off and cut attach door skin to the them. Then you can stain or paint. Door skin is what they use on hollow core doors. It's thin and easy to work with.

I would paint the cabinets in a light color using Nuvo paint. I have attached photos of before and after with similar cabinets to yours and a link to Nuvo paint. This paint will not require you to do any sanding and the result is beautiful. http://www.gianiproducts.com/nuvo-cabinet-paint/

I have these cabinets and they were painted white before we bought the house. I love them.

My parents had these cabinets when i was growing up, I believe they are cedar. You can paint over any wood after you lightly sand and give it a coat of Kilz. You need to sand enough to get the "shine" down. It's not as hard as it sounds. I'm not particularly a fan of woodstained cabinets and painted my own 1980's builders grade to black satin, then painted the old laminate countertop to look like granite. Super easy, and done in a weekend (counters), cabinets took a week - working only in the evenings after work. I just used kilz, craft paint and about 8 coats of polycrylic (not as difficult as it sounds) for the countertops. The finish is amazing and until I can afford to re-do the kitchen, it's a marvelous change.

Paint them an off white and put a glaze on them that will fill in the cracks. It will brighten it up but hide the flaws and make them look good!
  • Pat Pat on Dec 30, 2015
You mentioned boys and grease......When my boys were little ----birth to 5 years old..... I had white glossy enameled cupboards....Little hand prints, rubber tired toys, greasy hands were so easy to wipe off. I would not hestitate to paint your cupboards white but make sure it is a scrubbable paint.....ask your paint store.

First thing I'd do is remove the outdated, light-blocking valence over the window or modify to a straight line valence. I would keep the window treatment simple - such as mini blinds or roman blinds. Then I'd paint the cabinets. No screaming white - maybe a soft creamy white to brighten the room.

To bring the counter top for what I see, paint the cabinets a real light grey and put nickle nobs then yellow or pull that green in the floors as decors around in the kitchen....
