I have wood kitchen cabinets that are very close to a hot wood burning stove. What kind of finish (paint/stain/polyurethane) can I put on the doors so it doesnt peel, bubble, or feel sticky.

  • You should be able to paint he surface with any product you desire assuming the cabinets are a proper distance from the stove. Darker colors however will absorb the radiant heat faster and heat up the cabinets causing heat damage to the surface of the paint. However I have a larger concern here. Your cabinets should be at a minimum of 36 inches away for fire safety. If they are not, an based upon your concern of paint conditions, I would suggest that you try to adjust that distance as best as you can. Then paint using light colors to reflect any heat that could be possibly absorbed. Wood and stored materials such as paper products within the cabinets themselves can spontaneously ignite with little warning. And as the wood ages and dies because of the heat the probably of this occurrence is much greater.
