Check local laws first! You don't want to put up a canvas or metal shed roof only to have to take it down because of local ordinances. In my city, anything like a patio roof has to match the slope and style of the house roof, so that it looks as if it had been there all along. All posts have to be grounded in and sealed by concrete.

Be sure to seal any part of your porch that touches your house or roof. Be sure the porch does not slope toward the house at all. Place a border around your patio to drain any water away from the area. A pergola allows air but screens most sun, and the shadows move all day. A metal roof will close off sun and air, as well as rain and snow. If you are allowed a fiberglass roof, you can provide great shade, but no air, so an open or screened porch may be what you want.

If you choose a composite roof, you can plan for a walled-in room originally or eventually.

So, you need to take each part into account: roof, ceiling, floor and connections, the house itself and the area around the patio, porch, or room. Best wishes 😇💞

If you have a smaller area you can get a retractable awning. Only problem with that is the wind
