I prune in the fall after it blooms. I didn't know you could divide them. I like to get the heavy flowers cut before winter, since ice and snow can break the branches.
Hello Cwhitt0247 :) Different varieties of hydrangeas need to be pruned at different times of the year. I am posting below two links to help you out. The first link tells about the different varieties and shows pictures of them in cse you don't know exactly which variety you have, and the second link talks about when and how to prune them and divide them :)

Leave the old flowers on until danger of frost is over or the frost will kill the new shoots .
