Take it outside if possible and first lay down an old sheet or plastic drop cloth. Dirt will go everywhere.

Speaking of dirt be sure to have enough new dirt handy. Put several inches of new dirt in the bottom of the new container. Then add plant. Fill in with more dirt. Water well. Don't forget about the hole on the bottom of the planter. You'll need a saucer or a plastic liner so water won't drip out.

Look for a planter that is about 1 and 1/2 times the size of the old pot. Make sure there are drainage holes in the base then add fresh soil in the base of the pot. Place the plant in the pot and fill around the plant with fresh soil. I always fertilize with miracle grow.

Choose the pot you like. Add some gravel or material in the bottom of the pot to help with drainage. Add good quality plating soil, leaving enough room to accommodate the soil from the smaller pot as well. Pull the plant and soil out of the smaller pot and add it to the larger pot. Add additional soil as needed to fill the new larger pot. Water the plant as needed.

After loosening the plant from the surrounding soil, you can usually just grasp the plant by the base and pull it from the pot. Before placing it in the new pot of soil, make sure there is a sufficient sized hole with room larger than the roots of your plant. It's a good idea to work some time-release plant food into the surrounding soil prior to planting. Massage the plant roots to loosen them to promote growth and then place the plant into the pot. Add soil around the roots gently and do not pack down. Give it plenty of water.
