Yes you can. As long as it's stable. Use tile mastic adhesive not thinset.
Hi, Yes you can. Here's a how to video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OypGqXx-6zo
Good luck!
Yes! "With their flat finishes that extend upward from the countertop, Formica backsplashes don't really add a lot in the way of detail or design to the kitchen. Formica is a type of plastic laminate that is used frequently on kitchen counters. In some kitchens, it is also extended on the backsplash area straight up to the cabinets. Because the glue that adheres it is so strong, often removing the Formica from the backsplash does some serious damage to the wall behind. Therefore, the best way to change the look of this area is to tile right over it." http://homeguides.sfgate.com/put-tile-over-formica-backsplash-71036.html
I would remove the backsplash first, then put your tile up.

DIY Cheap Subway Tile Backsplash
Agree with Ficher that if the present Formica backsplash is taken off before the new tiles are installed, it is going to make a mess of the wall. The damage will need to be repaired, and the wall prepped properly before continuing.
