Hi Sylvia. Have you tried bleach water? Bleach usually does the trick. It may be that it throughout drywall, and not just on the surface. If that is the case you will need to have it replaced so it doesn't spread to the structure of the house. Make sure you wear a mask and be careful.
There are very good mould sprays now for bathrooms which you can get from you hardware department. I live in the UK so i am not sure the name of the product I use would be available in the US.
Every time I clean my mirrors, they end up having tons of streaks and almost look worse than before I started. What could I use to clean them that won't leave streaks...

You can also try Concrobium Mold Stain Eraser.
Why not cover it with Stain sealing paint and go from there..........
I spray mine with diluted bleach leave for 5 minutes spray again then wipe with sponge let dry natural repeat as necessary x

Wipe with bleach, let dry, then paint entire ceiling with
Stain sealing paint...several brands available. After it dries, you can paint ceiling any color you like.
