We just installed a walk in shower and want a frameless door. Need to find one that works for tall family, but also, not sure what style door (sliders, one side only, both sides), swing type door, etc. And also, better to get clear glass or rain glass? Bathroom is not very large.

  • I love the swing door, but you need room for that, so you might need to scratch that one off your list. Measure measure measure! Next, how tidy is your family? What type of water do you have? I suggest rain glass otherwise you will be in there with a squeege and cleaning non stop to have it look tidy, rain glass is much more forgiving.

Some of these questions go to your personal taste such as clear glass or pattern. A pattern will hide soap and water drops better but clear will make the room seem more open & larger.

For financial reasons, I chose a clear door (my taste) with a frame only at the top (Homey Depot) with sliding doors .

The shower replaced a tub/shower combo so I needed it 5' wide.

Regarding a "tall family"....as long as you had tile put up to the ceiling and have used the proper bathroom paint, don't worry.

I would consider the barn door type sliders mounted high to roll a sheet of acrylic across the opening. Glass is much more expensive. Keep it clean and clear with shower spray or clear hydrophobic paint so it is not scratched during cleaning. Use stencils and spray paint in translucent grey or colors to decorate and provide modesty if desired. My biggest caution would be to avoid anything that can catch and hold water to grow mold. I would drill near bottom corners and attach either rollers or plastic pads to keep sheet from rubbing wall or second sheet of acrylic. If the store can get thicker acrylic for a little more than the usual 1/8" or 1/4" I would recommend it for stiffness and mass, less likely to twist or bend out of shape.

I have 60 year old tub sliding doors of aluminum with soft plastic panels that are in pretty good shape, but the frame bottoms and track on tub are a constant fight to keep mold free.

We just put in a new shower, replacing the elder walkin tub that was a miserable experience. We had never done this type of remodel before. The picture shows what we did. As far as the glass side and door...here are my pros and cons. The shower door is only 24 inches wide, and the door does not swing all the way open,so it doesn't hit the toilet or anything else. It is hard to maneuver sideways to get in the shower. Also...you have to plan time for squeegee and toweling. In a hurry..that's a con. Pro...it is beautiful to see. Yes it does make the room look bigger. Would I do it again? No. I would get a clear shower curtain to fit...or get a shower surround. Go to a real plumbing and accessory store and check out what they have. HD and Lowes have few selections. After the fact...we went to morgans...and saw some beautiful things that would have worked, for about the same $ the biggest con is the door opening. For some reason on HD floor I was able to fit in without twisting too much. But at home with the toilet there and the door not opening up all the way....nope.

Thanks everyone for your tips, suggestions and links. I'll look at them tonight. They are rather costly, so want to be sure we chose the best option!
