I spilled pumpkin pie filling on the metal pizza pan I was using under my pie plate as I was putting the pie in the oven. It is totally a mess and I am struggling to get the thick, black, burned on stuff off even after soaking for hours. I need ideas please if there are any better ways to remove the burnt on mess.

Start with if it's non- stick, sprinkle it with baking soda, and pour a little hot water over it in the sink. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then scrub with a sponge. If it's not a non-stick sprinkle salt with a little hot water in the sink and let that sit 30 minutes, then scrub with a good paper towel, then, use SOS, and rinse. If you need to, repeat.

Also those little nylon 'squeegees' are good. When all else fails, but not on a non-stick, a single edge razor blade held almost perpendicular to the surface will scrape without gouging.

    Try using Bar keepers friend

  • When baking anything that may drip, like pies, I line the cookie sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. You can also use aluminum foil, just have the dull side facing up.

Try soaking with fabric softener or hair conditionser. You can also try spray on oven cleaner.

Sounds insane, but this works. Put your pizza pan in the sink, line with softener sheets, add enough water to cover. Let sit over night and it should come perfectly clean. I've tried it when I thought I would have to throw the pan away and it worked.

Start with a dry pan. Pour undiluted concentrated Dawn on the burnt part and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before you scrub with a green pad or a metal scouring pad. Depending on the thickness, you may have to repeat this process.
