Appliance part - outrageous price

by Margita
I have owned a GE stainless steel refrigerator for 6 years. The drip tray in the bottom of the ice maker/water dispenser is a painted (to look like steel) plastic grille. Very cheap! Now the paint has started to flake off and has become very unsightly. I decided I wanted to replace it and looked online for parts. Absolutely ridiculous !!!! The cheapest price I found is $46. That is outrageous!!! Needless to say I will not replace, because I do not want to be ripped off. I think I will spray paint it. I am sure the bottle of spray paint will be worth more money than the actual part. :(
After I spray painted it this afternoon. This saved me at least $40.

I agree that repairs are VERY expensive, we live far enough into the country that no one wants to come out without charging an arm and a leg just to travel here then add in the repair itself, UGH!!! I have now learned to use You Tube to show me how to replace and repair my appliances, in the past year or so I have replaced a motor, heating element, door latch, strike plate and belt. Shopped around for the correct parts on line and followed the instructions on video step by step. Not as scary as it looks. :)

Margita, I learned that you CAN buy an extended warranty over the phone when you set the time for the service person to come. (put it on your charge card as any item charge can be brought back.) Then you have the warranty when the repair is done and the price is the lesser/warranty price. Then right after the repairman leaves, you can call Sears back and CANCELL the warranty and they reimburse your warranty fee. The Sears CSI on the phone told me that it could be cancelled at any time for a full refund. So I did. Asking a fair price is fair, but screwing the customer demands a strong payback. Vote with your pocket book!
