I use vinegar. Rubbing alcohol works too, but be careful with the dogs.
Johnson and Johnson baby powder works. Ants leave the area because the
talc is painful to walk on.
Inside I use EcoSmart or Victor's non-toxic ant spray that I get at True Value. Victors is mostly mint, EcoSmart is other herbals. They both kill on contact, and if you take a paper towel and spread the residue on the counters or cabinet edges it repels them, I also spray around the doors and threshold and wipe with paper towel.
Then twice a year I do use Carpenter Ant and Termite spray in the white spray bottle, on the foundation itself and around outside of door threshold in the spring and fall. Wear gloves and mask, keep dog inside while spraying.
In our kitchen, we sprinkled cinnamon around the perimeter of the counter and it completely got rid of the issue!
