How can I keep my chickens out of my flower pots?

We let the birds put of their pen during the day. A few of them like to scratch the dirt out of some of the flower pots and beds. Is there a safe chicken repellent?

I was considering this. Maybe build a lightweight removable frame that plants can grow thu and looks nice. Or lock the birds up but they love running around.

Plant fragerant flowers with the plant you are growing. Most animals do not like a different scent.

Make sure they aren't in their reach, have a temporary fence that you can put up around the area that they pick on the pots.

Put smooth river rocks in the plant containers to cover all the dirt, more than one layer deep to well cover it. They cannot get in it that way. It also keeps neighbors cats out of the dirt of the containers also.
