How do you thin out an over grown perennial garden
I don't know how to work from the front backwards and make it look attractive again.
It depends on what plants you have. Some need nothing, some need to be cut back, some need extra mulch at the bottom that you remove in the spring and some need to be covered. To help us help you better, let us know what plants you have. Your hardiness zone makes a difference too, that was easy to look up - search 'hardiness zone oil city, pa. Your hardiness zone is 5b in case you need it in the future. In that zone, you can plant some plants that are perennials in higher numbers but you have to either dig them out and store them away for winter or you have to cover them with some kind of mulch. If you need plants to need that kind of wintering over, you'll want more specific directions so knowing what kind of plants you have is important. They can't all be treated the same way.
Hope to hear back from you soon.
It depends on how big. Tilling(you can rent one at rental places like"Dixie Rents" the soil, adding mulched leaves will amend the soil. Adding ashes from fireplaces, cooking grills will also help soil, as will a light sprinkling of epsoms salts. In spring, add Black Kow compost and retilol in before planting. I'm a master gardener. You might consider taking classes if offered in your area.
If your garden is empty now. Get a good fertilizer and turn it over and in. rake it out smooth.
